Your feelings don’t need to be fixed. They need to be felt.
When you feel something painful, you often want to get away from it as quickly as possible.
That’s common and normal. We all do that to a certain extent.
I’ve known for a long time that it’s not good to suppress or avoid your feelings.
That doesn’t solve anything.
When you bottle up your feelings they come back in full(er) force later.
So, what do you do instead?
The best thing to do is to accept everything you feel, to welcome it in your body, and to fully FEEL what you feel WITHOUT thinking about it, judging it, labeling it, trying to get away from it, condemning it, getting in your head and wrapped up in stories about it, trying to analyze it or wanting to fix it.
That’s what I always tell my clients, and what I practice myself as well.
But this morning I realized that I can take this practice even deeper.
I no longer suppress the ‘big’ and ‘medium’ feelings, so that’s good. But those subtle feelings? Those little whispers that something is off or doesn’t feel right?
This morning I listened to a body scan meditation.
It was only 20 minutes, but it seemed like it lasted at least twice as long.
Because ALL those ‘little’ feelings I apparently ignored this week came up. Which is good because it came up on its way out. I feel much lighter now, even though I didn’t even realize I felt heavier before!
This experience showed me that I can be even more present in each moment.
It showed me that I tend to override those subtle feelings instead of welcoming them. I wasn’t aware of that before. I am now, so I can deepen my practice of being present and welcoming what is. And I’m grateful for that awareness!
How about you?
Are you present in each moment?
Do you allow yourself to feel what you feel and welcome every feeling, whether it’s ‘good’ or ‘bad’ or ‘big’ or ‘small’?
Or do you bury your feelings in busyness, suppress them with alcohol / food / watching TV / drugs / … (fill in your favorite way to escape how you feel).
It may seem counterintuitive to welcome in the feelings you don’t want to feel.
But when you do, the energy keeps flowing and the feeling will leave you-and you’ll feel lighter, if only a little bit.
When you resist your feelings, their energy gets stuck and gets activated every time something happens that triggers that same feeling-that’s why you can sometimes overreact to the simplest, littlest things. Plus, keeping things bottled up is a constant energy drain that diminishes your joy and zest for life.
Whatever you feel, allow yourself to feel it.
It takes practice at first, but I promise you: your life will become so much lighter!
